Cosmetology State Board Practice Test

What the written exam covers, and how to practice for it.

A cosmetology state board practice test lets you rehearse the written (theory) exam under realistic conditions before the real thing. Oro is a practice-test app for the cosmetology written exam: a free readiness diagnostic, hundreds of questions with cited explanations, and full timed mock exams. It prepares you for the written test only, not the hands-on practical exam.

What the written state board exam covers

Every state licenses cosmetologists through a written (theory) exam, and most states add a separate hands-on practical exam. The written exam is a multiple-choice test of the science behind safe salon work.

The topics are similar across states because they exist to protect the public: infection control, sanitation, and safety (usually the most heavily weighted area), hair care including cutting, styling, and chemical services like color, perms, and relaxers, skin, scalp, and nails, and anatomy and basic chemistry. Your state then adds its own laws and rules.

Many states use the National-Interstate Council (NIC) written examination, commonly delivered by PSI at a testing center. Your state board's candidate information bulletin lists the exact topic breakdown, question count, and passing score.

How practice tests help you pass

Re-reading a textbook builds recognition; a practice test builds recall, which is what the exam actually measures. Answering a question and immediately seeing why each option is right or wrong is one of the most effective ways to study, combining active recall with spaced repetition.

In Oro, every question comes with a cited explanation, so a wrong answer teaches you the underlying rule instead of just marking you down. Timed mock exams rehearse your pacing so the real test feels familiar, and a readiness score tells you honestly when you are ready, without overselling.

Common questions

How many questions are on the cosmetology written exam?

It varies by state, but the written portion is commonly around 100 multiple-choice questions. Check your state board's candidate information bulletin for the exact count and passing score.

Is the practice test free?

You can take a full readiness diagnostic and practice real question sets for free. Full access is a one-time $19.99 unlock, with no subscription.

Does it prepare me for the practical exam too?

No. Oro prepares you for the written (theory) exam only. The hands-on practical exam is a separate test in most states, graded in person.

Will it cover my state?

The core science applies in every state. Texas includes its state law and rules; other states use the national theory coverage. The app shows exactly what is covered for your state before you pay.
